Making Holiday Memories in St. Joseph

December 11, 2012

Many communities across Missouri offer excellent ways to usher in the holiday season, and St. Joseph is no exception. Events and activities in Northwest Missouri are guaranteed to cheer up even the stingiest Grinch!

Holiday Park

Holiday Park (Krug Park), St. Joseph

For instance, did you know one of the major outdoor holiday lights displays in Northwest Missouri is found in St. Joseph’s largest park, Krug Park? Beginning in 1981, Optimist Clubs in the city, along with the Parks Department, began converting the 163 acres into a Winter Wonderland called Holiday Park.

Today, more than 100,000 visitors drive through each year to see the lavish display of lighted arches and trees, winter scenes and the park’s lovely Italianate buildings breathtakingly outlined in lights. At the southern end of the Parkway, Hyde Park, or the South Pole, is dazzlingly lit for the holiday season. Admission is free to both parks, though donations are accepted … and you’ll even get a few of St. Joseph unique candy bars, the Cherry Mash, before you leave. Both parks are open every evening from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. and will be lit until Jan. 1, 2013.

Wyeth Tootle Mansion

Another amazing location to view St. Joseph’s ornate architecture decorated for the holidays is Wyeth Tootle Mansion. For four days only, Dec. 26-29, 2012, this magnificent 1879 Gothic mansion is in its splendor. It’s open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. As a special addition to this year’s lighting, the museum presents “Music at the Mansion,” Saturday, Dec. 29, starting at 1 p.m. The musical entertainment will include nine eclectic musical groups. Admission is $5 per person and free for children 8 and younger.

At 7 p.m. on Dec. 15, a special event will be held at the magical Missouri Theater.  “Yuletide Pops,” presented by the Saint Joseph Symphony, consists of nine favorite holiday compositions, three of which with be presented with the nationally touring student singing group from St. Joseph, The New Generation Singers. Single tickets start at $10.

We hope you all enjoy the upcoming holiday season and take some time to travel to St. Joseph. Experience unique history at one of our 16 eclectic museums or visit some of our large, charming shopping districts and interesting antique stores to find that perfect gift. We’re much closer than you think!
