Enrich Your Getaway with Memorable Dining Experiences

One of the best things about travel is getting to explore new places and learn something different. Of course, one of the best ways to experience a place is through the food.

You may have heard the adage that when you travel, eat where the locals eat. You’ll have an experience to remember years in the future.

I still remember the roasted red pepper risotto I had at Cafe Verona, on the square in Independence. We’d been sightseeing all day and this fabulous dinner wrapped up our outing in fine fashion.

I loved the roasted red pepper soup (yes, there’s a theme going on with roasted red pepper) at Chaumette Winery in Ste. Genevieve, so much that I asked the chef if I could take him home with me.  The meal, enjoyed on the deck, topped off a beautiful day learning about wine and soaking in the beautiful scenery.

The dessert case at the Blue Owl in Kimmswick presents a challenge as you try to decide which of the many delectable items to sample.  The restaurant, in a tiny town on the Mississippi River, draws many who sample the home cooking and the Levee High Apple Pie, and then walk it all off by visiting the many shops.

My family and I ate ‘til we thought we’d explode at Sweetie Pie’s, a soul food restaurant in St. Louis. The proprietor of the restaurant is a former Ikette who sang with the Ike and Tina Turner Review.  We visited the Mangrove location close to the Missouri Botanical Garden, which made for a great outing.

Kansas City is known for its barbecue and the local visitors association suggests there are nearly 100 places to sample Q in KC. I’ve eaten at more than a few, and take my word for it, it’s all good.

Each of these experiences added to the overall enjoyment of the destination.

There are several other foods that have Missouri roots. For instance, toasted ravioli originated in St. Louis, supposedly when a chef dropped some ravioli into boiling oil rather than boiling water, while cashew chicken originated in Springfield.

The next time you’re planning an outing, make sure to include some of the best local eating places in your trip. You’ll make lasting memories – and your taste buds will thank you.
