Five Ways to Cool Off in Missouri

July 6, 2012

High temperatures across Missouri have been breaking records for the last couple of weeks; as of this writing, the forecast high today in Jefferson City is 107.

The hot weather has people wondering where they can go and what they can do to beat the heat. Fortunately, there are plenty of options in Missouri to help you stay cool on a hot summer day. Here are five you might consider.

Visit Missouri’s Show Caves: Missouri has a wonderful collection of show caves to explore, including a few that are nationally and internationally famous. Even if you have no plans to get married anytime soon, enjoy at trip to Bridal Cave in Camdenton, near the Lake of the Ozarks. Along with beautiful natural formations, Bridal Cave offers relief in the form of cool, 60-degree temperatures year-round. You aren’t likely to break a sweat during this tour. Water slides at White Water in Branson

Splash Down at a Water Park: There are several great water parks in Missouri, and many municipal pools also have fun features such as water slides and lazy rivers. One great place for water-play adventure is Hurricane Harbor, part of Six Flags St. Louis. In addition to the 560,000-gallon wave pool, Hurricane Harbor has water slides and a lazy river. There’s also a cool new feature, the Bonzai Pipeline: You step into a cylinder, the floor falls out from underneath you, and you spiral downward six stories at about 40 mph. Borrow Air Conditioning: Head to one of the Show-Me State’s incredible museums for a day of art, history, culture and fun – free air conditioning included. One of the most unique museums in Missouri – in the U.S., actually – is the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial. It’s the only museum in the country dedicated solely to World War I. In addition to learning more about this important time in world history, the museum offers an inside look at the lives of soldiers who served during the war. Also, a trip to the top of the iconic Liberty Memorial Tower provides an incredible view of Kansas City. To learn more about museums in Missouri, click here.

Catch a Live Show: Comedy. Music. Magic. Rock. Pop. Yes, Branson truly has it all. Enjoy a performance in the “Live Music Show Capital of the World,” where you find everything from Ozarks humor and country music to tribute artists and performance groups. For a big show – and by big, think 50 performers – consider seeing “it” at the Hughes Brothers Theatre. Lavish stage numbers and a variety of musical genres highlight this show featuring a family of talented performers. For more on live shows in Branson, please click here.

Canoes on the Current River

Float Your Boat: Take a float trip on one of Missouri’s beautiful waterways on a warm day; if you tip the canoe, well, no biggie. The water will feel pretty darn good. A great spot for floating in Missouri is the Current River. Float the lower Current River near Doniphan with help from KC’s On the Current, where you can rent canoes, rafts, kayaks and tubes for your adventure. Want to make a weekend of it? No worries, KC’s has sites for both tent and RV camping. For other float-trip options around Missouri, click here.
