Celebrate Spring in Sikeston

March 27, 2012

Enjoy a carriage ride during the annual Sikeston-in-Bloom festivities.

Ready to celebrate spring? Sikeston is the place to do it! Our spring event season in Historic Downtown Sikeston kicks off with Sikeston-in-Bloom and the Bootheel’s Best BBQ Cook-off on April 28.

Both Sikeston-in-Bloom and the Cook-off will be held in Downtown Sikeston.  Sikeston-in-Bloom will be located in American Legion Square (corner of West Malone at North New Madrid Street) from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The band Bluegrass Revival will provide live entertainment as you stroll through the park enjoying crafts, children activities, and concessions. Carriage rides through Historic Downtown Sikeston also are available.

Some of the best cooks in the area will be in Malone Park (corner of Center and Stoddard streets) to compete in the Bootheel’s Best BBQ Cook-off. You’re invited to join the fun, as these chefs prepare barbecue chicken, pork ribs and beef hamburgers.

While downtown, you’ll want to visit the Sikeston Depot Museum & Art Gallery. This restored 1916 train depot is on the National Register of Historic Places and features a historical museum and an art gallery exhibiting the works of local and visiting artists.

You’re invited to visit the Sweetgum Gallery and Front Street Studio & Art Gallery, also in Downtown Sikeston. Don’t miss the opportunity to browse Downtown Sikeston’s boutiques, antique and collectibles shops; all located within a few blocks of the Museum.

Explore the beautiful homes of Sikeston with a walking or driving tour.

If you enjoy architecture and historic homes, you’ll want to take the Historic Homes Walking/Driving Tour. Free brochures are available to give you the background on more than 25 majestic homes and buildings constructed in the late 1890s and early 1900s. During this period, Sikeston was home to more millionaires than any city of its size in the United States.

If golf’s your game, don’t miss the opportunity to play in Bootheel Golf Club’s Coors Lite 2-Person Scramble, May 19-20. Register no later than May 18 by calling 573-472-6111.

The Sikeston Jaycees add to the fun on May 19 with their Annual Crawfish Boil & Music Festival held at the Sikeston Rodeo Grounds, 1308 N. Ingram. Bring your friends to enjoy an evening of freshly cooked crawfish with all the fixings and live music.

Sikeston and the surrounding area offer a number of unique restaurants, cafes and pubs. Catch a roll at the world famous Lambert’s Café, voted the No. 1 place to “Pig-out” by the Food Network for its generous portions and flying food. You can dine in a bank vault, have lunch at intimate vineyard bistros or enjoy down-home southern barbecue.

Situated at the crossroads of America’s heartland at the intersection of Interstate 55 and 57, and the junctions of Highways 60, 61 and 62, Sikeston is conveniently located halfway between St. Louis and Memphis. Many years ago I traveled to Sikeston and was in the Holliday Inn when I was informed of my sons birth, that was nearly 50 years ago. I was wondering if I could have one of the brochures fpr the Homes tour. I would really love this, but I am unable to travel that far any more and love old homes. Thanks so Much!!!!!!

I have asked the Sikeston CVB to send you a homes tour brochure; please let me know if you don’t get one in the next couple of weeks.
      Thank you,
