My (Summer) Bucket List

Many of us have a bucket list – you know that list of things you want to do before you turn 30, 40, 50 or whatever. They may be exotic adventures, such as climbing Mount Everest or visiting Antarctica. They might be a trip to the Eiffel Tower or the top of the Statute of Liberty.

But in addition to your lifetime list, do you have a summer list? I do. Monet’s Water Lilies are on exhibition through Aug. 7 at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.  This exhibition brings the three parts of the triptych, owned by the Nelson, the St. Louis Art Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art, together for the first time in years.  I don’t know a lot about art, but I know I love the impressionists.

While I’m visiting museums, I also have to check out “America I Am: The African American Imprint” exhibit that opens at the Missouri History Museum Memorial Day weekend. I want to take my girls, who are 21 and 11. I think all three of us will learn something.  While we’re there, I know just where we’re going to eat, it’s a restaurant devoted entirely to macaroni and cheese, Cheeseology http://www.cheese-ology.com.

I also haven’t been to the zoo in a few years, so that’s going on the list, along with some musical theater at either the Muny in St. Louis or the Starlight in Kansas City, two outdoor venues. Maybe I’ll go to both.  Who knows?

I’m also going to take in a baseball game before the summer ends. I hope the St. Louis Cardinals will be flying high when I make the trip to Busch Stadium.  I can’t wait to buy a hot dog (they taste best in the stadium), some peanuts or cracker jacks and an ice-cold beverage.

This summer is also the 150^th anniversary of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, which was an early battle in the Civil War. It happened in Springfield and the reenactment will take place in August. I am a confessed history nerd, so I would love to check out the battle.
