Root Beer Milk?

September 24, 2010

I love to see the reaction on people’s faces when I tell them about root beer milk. Most people scowl and say “Yuck, that doesn’t even sound good.” Little do they know it is a little piece of heaven right there in a glass bottle; it’s brought to you by Shatto Milk Company in Osborn, Mo.

My response to people is always, “It tastes like the bottom of a root beer float.”

My girlfriends still didn’t believe just how tasty this milk could be so I stopped on my way back from Kansas City one day and bought several different flavors, including strawberry, chocolate, orange dream and root beer. The next day I brought the milk to a scrapbooking event and their reactions reminded me of the movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” where Willy Wonka says “The strawberries taste like strawberries. The snozzberries taste like snozzberries!”

One lady said the orange dream tastes like the milk left over after a bowl of Fruity Pebbles or Trix. That was my exact response after trying it for the first time. And the root beer milk really does taste like the bottom of a root beer float!

Another good thing about this tasty milk is that it comes in glass bottles, which keeps the milk extra cold and super creamy. Plus, the bottle is cute so you can add some ribbon and paper and make it into a gift for somebody. (I would suggest cutting a whole in the top and making it a piggy bank or adding some dry hot cocoa mix layered with mini marshmallows.)

The only downside to Shatto Milk Company and its wonderful flavors is that, at this time, it is only available in the Kansas City area.

Why, you ask? Shatto Milk Company is a small dairy farm in northwest Missouri that is limited in its productivity due to its size. However, if you are interested, they do give tours and the kids can pet the baby cows and the whole family can tour the facility and discover how milk is transformed into what you buy at the store.
